General Information

The school aims to identify the social, emotional and educational needs of all pupils. For children with special educational needs, the school provides individual programmes of work. Parents are regularly informed about the progress of their child. The involvement of external agencies is sought as appropriate.

The school has an Inclusion Manager (the Headteacher) who is responsible for overseeing the provision for children with special needs. All teachers are involved in the preparation of individual education plans for any child with special needs in their class.

Support for children is varied – it may involve referral to the Educational Psychologist, one-to-one or small group work, additional adult support within the classroom, individual teaching programmes, careful monitoring of specific and agreed targets within the class.

The school is lucky to have an active P.T.A. organisation, which supports the work of the school by organising social and fund raising events. These events help bring the school staff and parents together for the benefit of the whole school community. Funds raised at these events help the school to purchase items not normally able to be provided through the school budget allowance from the Authority.

Each parent is automatically a member of the association when their child is registered at Millhouse School. Meetings are called regularly and these are open to any parent to attend.

Each year group from Y1 to Y6 elect a child to be School Council representatives. The School Council meet, discuss and make recommendations to the School Management group. They also take on responsibilities to lead school improvement initiatives.

If there is a vacancy for a Parent Representative an election is held. The Authority will write to each parent of registered pupils advising them of their right to be represented on the Governing Body of the school and inviting the submission of nominations. Advice is offered on the formalities to be observed, including the provision of nomination forms and arrangements for holding a ballot as and when appropriate. Elections have in the past been held in school under the control of the head teacher.

The school recognises the great contribution parents can play in their children’s education. This ranges from simple interest and support in the child’s life at school, through to helping your child with work at home, and to specific directed work in school either alongside your own child or in a general way with other children. Many parents have specific skills which can be used in school.

We have several Age Concern volunteers, who are CRB checked, who help mentor pupils and develop reading in school.

We actively encourage community involvement through our school visits and visitors.
We offer Barnsley FC training and hold a charity penalty shoot out.
We host Family Learning events and social events, such as our Astro Evening, ‘The Bin Bag Ball’ and regular coffee mornings.

Seasonal events are very special to us for example, Harvest, Christmas, Easter and Maypole dancing.
